Subject Philosophy
‘Thought is not merely expressed in words; it comes into existence through them.’ Vygotsky (1986: 218). If the fusion between thought and language is as strong as Vygotsky suggests, then the responsibility we carry as English teachers is a significant one; not only are we enabling children to articulate their thoughts, we may actually be teaching them how to think.
