Subject Philosophy
As a subject science struggles to eliminate stereotypes, to overcome misconceptions and to find its place in the lives of a busy society. Science is however, by its very nature a process of enquiry, an opportunity to open doors to children and to encourage them to ask “how” and “why” of the world around them.
Aims and Objectives
To stimulate and maintain pupils’ natural curiosity, interest and enjoyment of Science and to instil a sense of excitement and awe. To build upon pupils’ experience and prior knowledge as an aid to empowering them in their learning.
Core Skills and Scientific Enquiry
The ability to enquire and explore underpins the entire science curriculum, whether at foundation stage or at KS5. The skills required of a scientist at any age remain standard; the ability to ask a question; the ability to predict an outcome etc. From Nursery to year eight science at Copthorne is taught, wherever possible, using practical enquiry techniques.
