3 Copthorne pupils (Amardip, Madeleine and Adam Smith) were part of the Sussex U11 team that won the National Championships yesterday at Nottingham High School. There were 18 counties at the final with a team of 24 children each and to be crowned National Champions is a huge achievement. The Copthorne pupils should be especially proud of themselves since most teams consisted of Year 6 pupils and therefore the children were sometimes competing against those who were a year or even two years (in the...

The Mid Sussex Chess Spring Tournament took place in Crawley on Saturday, 20 April 2013. Thirty eight children from seventeen schools all over Sussex took part in this tournament which attracted many of the best players in the county. Four children from Copthorne Prep took part and we did incredibly well, coming away from the tournament with most of the trophies! The children played 5 games in total; each game carried a maximum 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw or one point for a loss. Many congratulations...

Congratulations to Jamie Ward (5/6), Daniel Gooda (3/6) and Madeleine Liu (4/6) who helped Copthorne to victory at the Cottesmore Chess Congress earlier this week. Ex-Copthorne boy, Josh Higgs won the individual trophy, and Madeleine was the best girl player on the day! The final rounds of the Sussex Primary Cup are all due to be played before the end of term, with all 4 Copthorne teams competing. We have high hopes that our “A” team (Madeleine, Amardip, Zevon and Adam) will be victorious!

Copthorne chess players, Adam Smith, Zevon Rustom and Elliott Martin-Drew were recently in action at a Junior Chess Tournament at Goffs Park in Crawley. Collectively they ammassed 38/45 points to enable Copthorne to finish in top spot once again, with Adam and Zevon finishing in 1st and 2nd places respectively! Very well played.
Congratulations to Jamie W, Dan G, Madeleine L and Ben K who helped Copthorne to joint top spot at the Chess tournament last week at Brambletye. Individual prizes were awarded to Dan, Madeleine and Ben for scoring the most points on their relative boards. The results from this tournament count towards the County Butler Cup so with only Warden Park and Worth to play, we are in a strong position! Well played.
Congratulations to Madeleine Liu, Amardip Ahluwalia and Daniel Gooda who all qualified for the London Junior Chess Championships which took place over 3 gruelling days at the end of December 2012. This is one of the most difficult tournaments of the year. Sussex Junior Chess had a total of 10 children at under 12 level and an astounding 3 of these come from Copthorne Prep. The children battled hard in various sections but well done to Daniel Gooda who came joint 5th in the Under 12 minor section,...
