Philosophy

Departmental Aims
“The academic is not the only road by which good minds can travel". "15 to 18", (The Crowther Report), 1959 Aims a) To develop capability in the skills, processes, knowledge and understanding involved in designing and making. b) To develop a critical awareness about the made world and the recognition that pupils can bring about change. c) To develop a sense of enjoyment and pride in pupils ability to design and make. d) To develop a range of skills related to decision-making and management.
Curriculum
It is expected that the pupils at Copthorne Preparatory School will where possible follow the requirements of the National Curriculum for 'Design and Technology'. Where necessary these requirements have been adjusted to fit with the present lesson allocation, classroom facilities and the availability of specialist staff although the aim is always to exceed the requirements specified in the document.
Fun in DT in Year 3
3KW have been looking forward to going to the new Home Economics room to make their sandwiches for some time. The amount of food we had in would have fed the British Army for a week! Strengthening Paper
Year 3KW had the challenge to strengthen an A2 sheet of tissue paper so that it could hold at least a 100g weight. Working in pairs they came up with different solutions. Year 3 are very excited about coming off timetable on Friday for Greek Day. They have already made their clay pots which are nicely drying ready to be painted and varnished on the day. Scary spiders
Year 3 have been making scary spiders jumping out of their webs this week in DT! They attached two differetn size syringes to a piece of plastic tubing and were able to manoevre the spider in and out of his wen using the air in one of the syringes. They had fun taking them to Mrs Richards (Head of DT)...
