English Aims and Objectives
The aims of the English curriculum at Copthorne are:
- to facilitate positive and effective communication between pupils and between pupils and staff;
- to provide knowledge about language and the opportunities to play with language in imaginative ways;
- to foster a love of reading, writing and performing literature
- to build self-confidence in all language users and to promote equal access
- to the written and spoken word
- to equip all pupils with a solid, coherent knowledge of syntax, grammar and punctuation using relevant and meaningful methods and resources
- to promote the benefits of a wide ranging vocabulary – for facilitating effective communication and for enriching self-expression
- to equip all pupils with the language skills and knowledge they need to achieve their potential at Copthorne, and to take an active role in the modern world beyond
- to enable the senior boys and girls to achieve high marks in the English components of the 11+ / 13+ Common Entrance examinations and to facilitate scholarships where appropriate
- to recognise and promote a cross-curricular approach to literacy within the school, helping staff to incorporate good literacy links at the planning stage.
