English Programme of Study

The curriculum at Copthorne is based on a new syllabus which is written by the Head of Department, Andrew Hammond, who also serves as IAPS Subject Leader for English and ISEB Common Entrance Setter. The new syllabus is bespoke to Prep schools, and blends the skills and attainment targets of the NC, NLS and the New Primary Framework with the requirements of the ISEB syllabus for 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance. This gives us an integrated, progressive programme of study that ultimately leads to Common Entrance at Key Stage 3, but provides Key Stage 2 pupils with the structure they need, particularly in the absence of SATs.
The new syllabus comprises three main areas for teaching and learning:
A: COMPREHENSION
B: COMPOSITION
C: COMMUNICATION
These areas are sub-divided further, as follows:
A: Comprehension
A1: Reading for Meaning
A2: Reasoning and Analysis
A3: Reading Range
B: Composition
B1: Syntax
B2: Punctuation
B3: Grammar
B4: Writing Range
C: Communication
C1: Speaking and Listening
C2: Group discussion and debate
C3: Drama
C4: Multimedia Skills
