French Aims & Objectives

The majority of pupils learn French at Copthorne Preparatory School from Nursery class and throughout the Junior and Senior Departments.

Although the textbooks, the Common Entrance and Scholarship format may change, all teaching should be aimed at increasing the children’s awareness, confidence and competence in the four skills (Attainment Targets) of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

  •  To promote enjoyment, confidence and proficiency in the use of the French language for the purpose of practical communication, making full use of the four basic skills (Attainment Targets) – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  •  To promote an awareness of, and sensitivity to, the culture, customs and everyday life of the people of the countries in which the target language is spoken.
  • To develop an awareness of the structure of the language and of    language learning and to provide a satisfactory linguistic base for the possible study of a foreign language beyond the age of 13.
  •   To promote contacts abroad and to encourage pupils to participate in trips and immerse themselves in the foreign language through  wider reading and the use of audio visual material and IT material.
  •  To extend each pupil to his/her full potential in the language and to engender in him/her a desire to continue with further language learning.
  •  Above all to engender a love of language and an enthusiasm to use French (and/or foreign languages) as a means of communication on human and social level, thereby helping to create greater understanding, form friendships and avoid possible prejudice intolerances

Specific curriculum objectives are stated in the schemes of work.
