Mathematics is a characteristic way of organising our experience of the World which is employed wherever there is a structure or ‘pattern’. As such it may enrich our understanding, enabling us to relate, interpret and communicate our experiences and ideas as well as giving pleasure.
‘Why teach Maths ?’ a question often asked by pupils. How is this relevant to everyday life ? I think it is put rather eloquently by Travers et al. (1977) : "mathematics is useful, mathematics is beautiful, and mathematics disciplines the mind".
