Maths Aims & Objectives
AIMS OF THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SCHOOL.
Our Mathematics courses at all stages should seek to:
1) Contribute to pupils’ personal development and overall education
Mathematics is a characteristic way of organising our experience of the World which is employed wherever there is a structure or ‘pattern’. As such it may enrich our understanding, enabling us to relate, interpret and communicate our experiences and ideas as well as giving pleasure. As a subject, therefore, it lies at the heart of a great deal of human activity.
2) Enable pupils to develop to the limit of their capability the mathematical skills and understanding required fro their present needs, both in and out of school, and for the future demands of their next school and consequently adult life, employment, further study and training;
Mathematics has important applications in many other fields, for example sciences, engineering, social sciences and management. As a result of this, wherever possible, links are made with cross curricular subjects.
3) develop an appreciation and enjoyment of mathematics and an awareness of its importance in society and in the development of technology.
Mathematics provides the most readily accessible form of problem solving in the classroom because it does not depend on the pre-existence of a substantial body of knowledge. Involvement in problem solving enables pupils to exercise and acquire confidence in their intellectual powers. Thinking independently and expressing arguments in a logical and ordered manner does not always come easily. Good habits can be acquired by being in an environment in which thinking is explicitly valued, and by coming to recognise the general value of reasoning.
In conclusion no pupil at Copthorne should be ‘afraid’ of maths and all should be encouraged to be proud of their achievement at what ever level they attain.
