Music lessons are designed to involve all children, wherever they fit into the Commitment and Skills Continuum, in enjoyable and stimulating, musical activities – Listening and Responding, Performing, Composing. Class music lessons are delivered to all pupils throughout the school from year 1 to 8. The music schemes of work aim to provide pupils with a rich and varied music education. Lessons are structured to equip pupils with useful skills for composing, performing and appraising music whilst learning about a range of different music genres within western classical, popular music forms and music from around the world.
Music class activities in which all children participate in: • Performing for peers / with peers in class • Performing in year-group concerts • Observing peers who have instrumental skills • Taking part in stage musicals • Whole-class / whole-school performances • Chapel / assembly participation
The aims of the Music Department at Copthorne School are to help each child work towards his or her own musical potential by encouraging every child to listen to music critically, to study the performance of music according to their ability and inclination and to enable them to create their own music. Participation in musical activity can help pupils to grow in maturity and develop greater self-discipline and social skills, thus enriching their all-round learning in the school environment.
