Spanish Philosophy
A different language is a different vision of life.” – Federico Fellini, Italian film director
Learning a language should not be just an activity where the ultimate goal is to achieve an academic standard that will hang on a wall gathering dust, never to be used again. It is a life skill that will open doors to different cultures and experiences. To be mono-lingual limits an individual’s personal growth and development, preventing them from stepping out of their own reality to sample what the rest of the world has to offer them.
Whether you possess an excellent command of another language or whether you can simply communicate the most basic of phrases, conversing in another’s language says much about the person we choose to be: confident, open-minded and adventurous.
You don’t have to be able to read Don Quixote in its original form or travel extensively around the globe to appreciate a country’s culture and language. It could be just simply being able to greet another human being in their own language rather than presuming that everyone will speak ours.
Language is a living thing that is constantly changing and evolving, influenced by the present and past, seeping into every aspect of our lives. How wonderful would it be to experience this on several different levels?
So why learn Spanish?
Approximately 450 million people speak Spanish as a native language, and as a result it is the third most spoken language in the world. It has now become a popular second or third language to learn and with the today’s globalization of the world its usage is of increasing importance. Spanish is spoken as a native language in 21 countries; it is spoken as a minority language in several other countries such as the U.S and the Philippines.
Possessing a sound knowledge of the language would not only provide one with insights into peoples and cultures that a non-speaker may not appreciate but also could improve one’s future employment potential.
Therefore there can be no doubt that being able to communicate in Spanish would open an infinite number of doors to opportunities that might not be normally available to us as individuals.
