Well what a spectacular afternoon of rounders today for the U9S, and a great way to end the half term! Although Great Walstead were a good team I do not feel the scoreline reflected the true account of the match today, and the U9S were indeed the worthy winners! From the word go the U9s geled well together on the pitch demonstrating some super fielding, always BACKING each other up, which was again commented on by the oppositions coach! There was also some super-sonic batting today with 7 whole rounders being scored in just the first innings, 3 of them [...]

Another cold and cloudy Wednesday for the cricket and another bout of illness/injury for the seniors. Two new faces in the 1st’s, Edward and Ben V, meant serious changes for the 2′s and 3′s as a result. Arriving at Duke of Kent the game was to be a 20 over match with win or loss at the end. James N, back as cpatain, lost the toss and we were put in to bat. After a cautious start Jamie (16) and Ian (56) began to take toll of the bowling and ran well between the wickets to push the scoring rate up. Jamie [...]

We amassed a huge total in our innings, thanks in part to some errant bowling, but also thanks to some good running between the wickets. Charlie and Kieron were the pair who ran and communicated best. Our top scorers today were Charlie who made 15 runs off 12 balls, Josh with 12 from 13, Bradley with 9 from 11 and Ayaan with 9 runs off 15 balls.
The girls won the toss and decided to field first. In the first innings, although Cumnor didn’t score many whole rounders, we gave away lots of half rounders through no balls and poor communication as to where the ball should be thrown. As the girls started to relax and focus, this got less and Charlotte started to bowl very accurately as well as catching someone out. Lottie had a very strong and accurate throw to Jemima on 2nd post when Cumnor had a backwards hit which stopped them scoring at 2nd. Cumnor scored 9 rounders in the first innings, which [...]

We started off batting and Cumnor’s fielding was very good, we struggled to put anything on the scoreboard as their player on 2nd post had very safe hands. We hadn’t scored anything until Elise found space and got a rounder, with her quick speed and the slow fielding of Cumnor she managed to get all the way around. After watching Elise get us a rounder the girls started to switch on more and we were getting more ½ rounders by getting to 2nd post. Yelena then got a rounder from hitting the ball into space. Although generally the bowlers did well, virtually every wayward delivery was severely punished. Ben K was unlucky on several occasions and Jamie W and Ian also came away with some credit. On another front well done Ian for captaining the side really well in the absence of the unwell James, I thought you did a top job in difficult circumstances. Copthorne fielded first and Victoria was spot on with her bowling, not giving any extras away. As the innings went on the girls missed a few catches and run out opportunities but they managed to keep a positive attitude and restricted the home side to 6 ½ rounders. Copthorne scored 211, with no single batsman really making a big score though Zac (8), Charlie (7) and Freddie (6) were our top three run-scorers. Luke and Bradley also contributed nicely with 5 runs each. In reply, Cumnor made 212, beating us by a single run. This was a tense and exciting game, with every single ball gaining in importance as the came reached its climax. Unfortunately we ended up narrowly losing, and regretting every small mistake that we had made. The important thing is to take some positive memories [...]

Copthorne (5) – Cumnor (4) It was not quite strawberries and cream weather but the rain did manage to stay away for the girls to complete their first tennis match of the term against Cumnor House. Copthorne’s 1st pair, Katie and Sofia, dominated the afternoon by winning all three of their matches with superb ground strokes and a wide variety of shots. If the wind was not making it hard to return the ball, Katie’s serves sure did the job of keeping the opposition on their toes. Roselly and Michaela had the longest and most exciting closely fought matches, winning [...]

With the rain clouds clearing we set off down the A264 for an eagerly anticipated fixture against Brambletye. Toby won the toss and put Brambletye into bat on a green wicket. Two maiden overs were bowled by Zach and Andre as they passed the bat on a number of occasions. We once again worked hard in the field and this was highlighted when Zach instigated a run out with a fantastic direct hit. However we failed to take the catches that could have changed the course of the game dropping their captain 3 times before he went on to [...]

This weeks scheduled cricket matches where in doubt due to some typical English weather. However, the clouds thankfully cleared by the afternoon allowing the Colts B to host Brambletye on the second Copthorne pitch. Like the two previous weeks we had won the toss and chose to bowl going with the same strategy that had proven successful one week prior. Copthorne started a little sluggish with the ball and Brambletye capitalised scoring quickly to put us on the back foot. The visitors ended up posting a modest score of 117/2 off their allotted 20 overs. With that score seeming to [...]

The first 3rd team fixture of the season was an away Twenty20 match against Brambletye. Due to illness and injury we had to call upon 3 Year 6 boys who more than willingly answered the call to play up an age group. Captain, Joe Gache, won the toss and put the hosts into bat first. They batted throughout the 20 overs but were limited to 88 runs for 3 wickets; 1 caught and bowled by Dan Gooda, a clean bowl from Elliott Young and a “hit stumps” from another Young bowl. With no fewer than 6 dropped catches in the [...]

Wednesday the 8th of May saw the 2nd XI square up against Brambletye. We lost the toss and were sent in to bowl first. The innings started well with a few runs here and there, but generally the boys bowled well. After the first wicket taken by Sam Mayhew, their 3rd batsman started making runs quickly, which immediately put us on the back foot. Unfortunately, he went on to make 69. Brambletye ended their innings on 146. After tea we went in to bat and quickly lost a wicket first up. James Workman was however our saviour of the day making a very [...]

Back to the classic English summer weather for the trip to Brambletye and an early thank you to the loyal spectators who braved the temperatures. Bowling first we did not really cover ourselves with glory with yet another lethargic performance in the field with dropped catches and sloppy ground fielding. The bowling was fairly solid but the figures were not helped by the fielding allowing the opposition to reach 161 for 3 at tea. The batting performance did show a lot more application with the first wicket not falling until the 9th over. All the batsmen, Ian (15),Jamie (4), Ben K (12) and Josh [...]

We won the toss and put Brambletye in to bat. Brambletye made 182 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. We did not bowl particularly well, and gave away quite a lot of runs as extras, but some of our bowlers really did perform nicely: Bradley took one wicket for 5 runs, and Josh took a wicket for only 4 runs. Luke, Ayaan and Zac all got a wicket each too. Copthorne made 282 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket. Brambletye struggled to find the right line and length, and we batted very nicely. Our top performers with [...]

Another day of sunshine greeted the boys for their second match of the season against Windlesham. Copthorne were sent in to bowl first against a very strong Windlesham batting lineup. One of their boys was able to make a quick 50 and was then retired which put them into a commanding position. Copthorne hung in there however and bowled well for the rest of the innings. Windlesham ended up with 152 after their 20 overs. As we had struggled with our batting in the first game this was going to be a big test. After the loss of the first [...]
