A dry but bitterly cold afternoon greeted our second fixture and, after the comprhensive defeat of last week, a win was desparately needed. The opposition was Cottesmore and despite a comfortable win last year, this was a different team with many changes even from last week. Nafim in at prop and Jamie at 9 were significant changes. After the initial exchanges, it was clear that the sides were fairly evenly balanced although Cottesmore were more rapid to the ruck and had significantly better body positions which meant that we had little second phase ball. With most of the possession Cottesmore scored first but after some direct words we hit straight back with a break away try from Josh. The first half came and went with a further score from Cottesmore and 2 breakawaays from Josh and Ian H with Ian making the conversion. Half time and we had a slender 17 – 10 lead. I felt that we played better in the second half with more focused work from the pack, and the back row beginning to put pressure on the 10. However some very naive play and inept tackling resulted in 2 unanswered scores from Cottesmore leaving us on the wrong end of a 20 – 17 score with time running out. We exerted constant pressure but kept making really basic errors and it looked as if the score would never come, however a real team try, with drives form the pack, and then Elliot, gave Josh another opening which he took in fine style. Althoughthe kick was wide it turned out to be the final play leaving Copthorne on the trigh end of 22 – 20. Well done boys a really good early Christmas present. Thanks to our loyal band of very cold supporters and not least of all Mr Watson, the Worth housemaster, who refereed for us. Have a great christmas and keep fit!!!
