This has been the best start top a season for a long time and it is due in no small part to the enthusiasm, determination and talent of the group of boys at the top of the school. Charlie Francis was selected as Captain and has done a sterling job for us both on and off the field. He has been well supported by Rob White. Rugby is very much a team game and no one individual can do it all and it is the combination of talents that has given us such a good start. There are some formidable opponents yet to be faced but the level of improvement gives us every opportunity to do well.
The season started away at Windlesham who run 4 sides and there were concerns that we may be swamped by their unbeaten seconds. Nothing could have been further from the truth as we proceeded to blow them away in the first 10 minutes. Tries came from a variety of sources and all the replacements were used in a vain bid to stem the onslaught but tries continues to rain down, so much so that the final score was actually unknown.
Christmas saw the loss of Seunguin Ko back to Korea which left somewhat of a hole but once again the boys came good and Pennthorpe 2nds were duly beaten. Again multiple replacements were used and most of the stronger players ended up either on the bench or playing out of position.
St Aubyns were a different proposition and gave us some real problems for a while but in the end we played some very good rugby and ran out comfortable winners. It is pleasing to me that our tries are coming from good rugby and not simply physicality. Even at this early stage many of the players have made significant contributions and the team spirit continues to grow bonding the team into a real unit.
Stoke Brunswick as last year stung us into action by having the temerity to take a 7 point lead before we got our act together and finished the first half 26 – 7 up with some excellent rugby. The gas was reduced in the second half to leave us with a 33 – 7 win. It has become apparent that we have a pack of forwards who can produce good ball and a set of backs who know what to do with it. Add to that a number of set moves and we look in good fettle for the future. There are big games to come against Cumnor, Handcross and Brambletye and we will have to be at our best.
