Although still in the hockey term Copthorne’s 2nd VII captained by Abigail played their first netball match. Even with only a couple of practice sessions the girls looked comfortable on the court. The first quarter saw both teams exchange possession and territory as they tried to settle down into a rhythm and remind themselves of the rules. Both teams shooters dodged well to receive the ball, setting up well and converting most of their opportunities under the posts to go 2-2 after the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter saw the home side dominate the play with Abigail a vital link between the defenders and the attack, she was quick to move and support play from all over the court. The girls passing accuracy improved this quarter and they looked more to spread the play down the wings and constantly changed the direction of play to keep the opposition on their toes. Jemima S was on form as GA, getting goals in from all over. Even those that rebounded off the post she followed up her shot well to regain possession of the ball for a second go. This gave Copthorne a comfortable 7-2 lead at half time.

The speed and pace of play during the last 2 remaining quarters decreased as both teams were beginning to tire from the fast pace of the previous half. The girls continued to defend well with some excellent clearing out from the defence but the accuracy and pace of passes towards the attacking circle decreased allowing a lot more interceptions to be made. Both teams scoring opportunities dried up and between the both of them only another 3 goals added, leaving Copthorne 8-3 winners.

Well done to all the girls and to Jemima for being voted player of the match. Keep playing like this and you all should have a fantastic netball season.
