Colts ‘A’ XI v Tavistock & Summerhill

The team travelled to the match with high hopes of a win and after winning the toss, we elected to bat first. Only then did we discover that the wicket was a yard or two short and lacked a crease at one end. It was evident from the first ball that Tavistock had a quality player on the team and he bowled both accurately and at pace. Our openers initially kept him at bay and were able to score quite freely off the bowling from the other end. Charlie eventually fell to an excellent delivery but we managed to see out the remainder of his spell without losing a wicket. Following a change to the bowling we were able to score runs quite quickly and with Joe scoring 32, James 20 and Oscar 20 we were soon looking good for a big score. Their best bowler returned for a second spell and was soon taking wickets quite freely. Oliver H., Jordan, Oliver D., Chris and Andrew all lost their wickets cheaply and we eventually retired at tea having scored 120 for 9.                                                                                                                                                                                                       The Tavistock boys started their innings announcing that they were playing for the draw. However, Charlie took a wicket with his second ball in spite of struggling to find his length. Jordan took the second wicket in the 8th over with the score on 8. Only then did their star player take to the crease where he stayed for the remainder of the match scoring 58 of their 80 runs. I suspect that if we hadn’t dropped him when his score was on 3 that we might have won this game. All credit to the bowlers who grafted away,  bowling 40 overs in the same time that it took Tavistock to bowl 25. Well done to Oliver H. and James P. who took a wicket each, but special congratulations to Oscar who bowled 7 overs and took 5 wickets for just 4 runs. At 6 o’clock the score was Copthorne 120 for 9 and Tavistock 80 for 9, but on a timed game the match was drawn.  MB
