After a solid display last week, training sessions have been focused on doing the simple things well. Running straight lines, drawing defenders and using support players was the plan for today and the boys did not disappoint.
Excellent forward drives by the pack gave us field position and simple crash balls through the centres kept momentum going. Just like last week Toby ran a lovely line, in support of the breaking Dylan, to crash his way over the try line. Not to be outdone, Dylan also thought he would repeat last week’s exploits and “pick and go” at a ruck, finding the smallest of gaps to cross to extend the lead. Chris converted 1 of the 2 kicks to give a deserved 12 – 0 lead after only 6 minutes of play. Toby wasn’t content with only 1 try and at every opportunity ran hard and fast at unwilling defenders and after a half pitch sprint secured his second of the game. Jack, Nico, Gabriel and Ben continued to be the unsung heroes of the team, demolishing every ruck in sight giving the backs quick, clean ball to play with; it was now their turn to show what they can do!
Sticking to the game plan the ball was moved from scrum half all the way through the hands to Zac R at full back to touch down in the corner. With the scoreboard ticking over regularly it was a good opportunity to bring some new faces on. Zach P came on at hooker and Yonis on the wing with Tom and Toby making way. A reshuffle in the backs allowed Dan to slot in at centre and caused instant havoc by crashing through the middle and from the resulting ruck some quick hands again allowed Zac R to score his second. Within minutes Zac R had his hat-trick, joining the line late and holding off some wild tackles before diving to the corner with Will in close support. Matthew had controlled his back line well from fly half and by doing the simple things they were getting the rewards. Chris ended the half by slotting his 4th conversion from 6 attempts.
With the game secured there was another chance to mix things around and try new combinations; Tom returned to the game at fly half and Toby slotted in at tight head at the expense of Nico. The 2nd half had a similar feel as the 1st with our boys dominating the ruck area and having the better of the attacking play. A blistering run down the wing from Will opened up the Cottesmore defence leaving a huge hole for Dan to finally use his speed and leave would be tacklers for dead to score his first of the season. Matthew replaced Zac R at full back and instantly gained possession from a loose kick and ran it straight back into the visiting pack. Jack, who had hit anything insight all afternoon, rounded off the scoring with a half field blitz, shaking off numerous tackles and thump down in the corner. Chris added the extras and brought up the 50 point mark on the final whistle.
This game was won by purely doing the simple things well. Well done boys, your hard work in training paid off. Thank you once again to all the parents for your excellent support and encouragement; it really helps!
