1st XV v Great Walstead – Lost 19-54

There are always a number of fixtures each season that will provide a real challenge and Great Walstead is one of those. With over 70 boys involved in club rugby across the age ranges their rugby is always of a high standard and yesterday was no exception.

For the second game in a row we only really played in bits and seemed unable to sustain any concerted pressure. During training sessions we work on solid techniques which work in the game situation however if we do not execute these methods we cannot really expect success. Securing the ball at rucks remains an issue however on the 4 occasions that we got body positions correct we won the ball comfortably. The problem was that we only managed to do this on very few occasions. Josh remains a potent threat to any team if only we can win loose ball and put him into space. We achieved this a handful of times and Josh scored 3 tries as a result. Ben, whose kicking is getting better and better converted 2. Other high lights were a crunching tackle from Edward who is improving with every game, Hugo at 13 had a solid match and Elliot worked hard throughout. Rugby is very much a team game and all 15 players have to show determination when the going gets tough if you are to come away with any real credit, win or lose. Having said all that GW had a couple of real wrecking balls in the pack and have had an unbeaten season but that is no excuse for a lack of effort in certain areas. Without a strong defence defeat is inevitable and everybody can tackle if the will is there.  JC
