Seconds struggle in sub-zero conditions against Pennthorpe

Copthorne    0    Pennthorpe    53

It is always difficult to find positives when you are on the wrong end of a heavy defeat, but we knew from the start that we were up against a strong team in Pennthorpe.  Our boys may have had an inflated view of their abilities after our last match in which we gave Duke of Kent a thrashing of similar proportions, but we were also forced to play a weakened team after a couple of the Firsts players fell sick.

The score line looks bad, but there were some spells in the game where we really competed well.  I was very pleased with our scrummaging today.  We had a pretty raw pack of 6 boys, with Jack M and George J playing for the first time in quite a while.  In spite of this we won almost all of our own put ins, and actually also contested the rucks very well.  We were unfortunate not to get a try or two ourselves.  Ian B who had a great game, actually crossed the line but was held up, and James W just stepped into touch as he crossed the try line.  The main difference between the two teams was Pennthorpe’s slick handling and superior speed.  We missed a lot of one-on-one tackles against speedy and elusive opponents.

Ian H and James W made a lot of strong attacking runs for us, and the best pound for pound defender on our team was Ben who literally tackled pretty much anything that came his way in spite of being significantly smaller in many of the situations.  A good effort overall, but we have quite a few things to work on before we can compete against the likes of Pennthorpe.  DJ
