After a long Christmas break and a rainy games session on Monday the girls were keen to get back out onto the netball courts. Jennifer was captain today and started the afternoon well by winning the toss and choosing first centre pass. At the start of the match it took a little while for both teams to settle and find their feet! Jennifer and Jemima worked well together in the centre court passing the ball into shooters Sophie and Paige. Sophie was faster than her opponent and scored Copthorne’s first goal. Copthorne looked the stronger team and had the majority of the play. Samantha, Pippa and Emily were strong in defence not giving Hazelwood the opportunity to shoot. Sophie was fantastic as goal attack and got 2 more goals before the whistle went.

With the score 3-0 Copthorne’s confidence grew and they continued to be the stronger team having the majority of the possession. Once again defenders Pippa, Paige and Samantha marked their opponents tightly, making some great interceptions. Jennifer and Jemima controlled the centre court working well with the defence to give shooters Sophie and Ivy May lots of opportunities to shoot. When the whistle went for half time Copthorne were winning 6-0.

After a team talk and a well deserved drink of water the girls were ready to go! With a change of ends and a few positional changes it took both teams a little while to adjust. The whole team worked with endless energy and enthusiasm and their efforts were rewarded with yet another goal. In the last quarter Copthorne continued to mark their players tightly and keep possession of the ball. I was pleased to see them moving towards the ball and running into a space. When the final whistle went Copthorne had won 8-0.

A great start to the term and I commend the girls for their endless energy and effort throughout the match. Congratulations to the whole team and a special mention to Sophie for her fantastic shooting and determination today.
