Under 10 Rugby Tournament at Christ’s Hospital

A break from the norm of Colts rugby saw Copthorne take a strong Under 10 (Year 5) team to Christ’s Hospital for an annual tournament.  The day started with the lunch time procession including a marching band and flag bearers leading their house into the dining hall.  A short training session looking at the key areas of the game followed before the main event; an 8 team competition where winner takes all!

Pooled into a strong group of Pennthorpe, “The Heights” Haslemere and Aberdour we knew we had to be on guard throughout if we were to progress to the main cup competition.

Group Game 1: Pennthorpe (1 – 1)

Our opening game against Pennthorpe was a physical affair and one that we should have won.  We had the majority of possession, dominated the scrum and commanded the tackle area but other than Chris’s try straight from kick off we could not break through.  Pennthorpe fought hard and levelled the game at the death to set up what was to be a head to head try scoring competition!

Group Game 2: Haslemere (5 – 0)

We found our flow against “The Heights” and realised that making tackles counts in 9-a-side rugby.  Chris and Gabes found gaps in the defence to give us a 2 try lead at half time and soon after the restart Jack crossed for 3 nil.  With the game won it was all about keeping a clean sheet and put the pressure on Pennthorpe to do the same in their fixture with Aberdour.  A dart blind from Will saw him run half of the pitch to score and Jack sealed the victory with a trademark drive and dive for a final score of 5 – 0.  Pennthorpe had just won 7 – 0 and were in the driving seat to take the top spot in the group on trys scored.

Group Game 3: Aberdour (11 – 0)

Aberdour had had a tough afternoon; beaten comfortably twice already, so we knew that we had a chance to put on a big score and overtake Pennthorpe at the top.  With Pennthorpe playing next to us, and finding life hard against Haslemere it spurred our boys on to make their superiority count.  Chris, Will, Nico, Gabes, Elliott, Dan and Zac shared the trys between them and with Pennthorpe conceding and only winning by 5 – 1, we knew we had taken top spot and would compete in the Grans Final.

Cup Final: Oakwood (1 – 3)

Oakwood had finished top of their group with 3 wins from 3 so this was always going to be a challenge.  However, after a lapse of concentration and a missed tackle put us a try behind in the opening stages we hit straight back through Chris breaking through tackles to score in the corner.  This was the most physical game of the whole competition with both teams looking to take the advantage but unfortunately we lost mini battles on too many occasions.  Oakwood exploited another missed tackle to take a 2 – 1 lead into half time.  We certainly had the better of the possession in the second half and moved the ball around well but the Oakwood defence held strong.  Penalties for both sides were at a premium for what can only be described as “over aggressive” tackling but this only added to what was an exciting match.  Piling on the pressure and looking for the equalising try we over committed at a ruck and with so many feet involved the ball squirmed out and was collected by a free Oakwood player to run the length and secure the win in the final play.

It was a great day of rugby and the travelling support were treated to a show of grit and determination.  The whole team were disappointed with the way the day ended but this will only spur them on for future victories.  Well done to all; you were superb.

  1. Great report it was a good afternoon overall the boys should be proud of their achievment coming 2nd out of 8 teams. Once again Copthorne parents outnumbered the visiting schools support!
