The 39th IAPS National Chess Championships was held last week at Aldro School and nine members of our impressive chess team took part. 119 players (including 6 England squad members) from 17 schools took part.
Copthorne was represented by: Team Finnegan (Amalia, Freya, Yelena), Daniel Gooda, Gabriel Jones, Josh Higgs and Team Kinnear (Ben, Peter and Nick). Our mascot, Ruari Finnegan, was a super star! And not forgetting the most experienced players play in the Championship section and everybody else plays in smaller sections catering for younger and less experienced players. All of our players fought hard and had an exciting time playing against other schools and then boarding for 2 nights. Amongst the prize winners were Amalia Finnegan: 3rd in Group A and Team Finnegan who came 2nd in the Girls team competition.
Thanks goes to the Headmaster for his support and to Mr. Ed Gooda who was our team manager for the second year.
