Copthorne just miss out on U14 Butler Cup Chess Triumph

Having beaten all and sundry in the qualifying rounds before Easter, we were through to the last 4 teams in this countrywide competition.
Our young team (one U12 and 3 U11 players) were drawn against rivals Windlesham House in the semi-finals with Bishop Bell (Eastbourne) and Cuckfield Community Technology playing in the other semi.
Against Windlesham, Jamie lost narrowly on board 1, as did Ben on board 4, but super victories from Freya and Dan on boards 2 and 3, saw us through to the final on ‘countback’ by the narrowest of margins.
Cuckfield beat Bishop Bell 3-1 so our youngsters prepared to take on the might of their team (one year 9, two year 8 and one year 7 boy).
Jamie was playing an England International on board 1, and Freya another county player on board 2.
Both Ben and Dan won their games easily which set up a thrilling wait as we watched Jamie and Freya slog it out on boards 1 and 2. A win or a draw from either would have given us the title.
Both games were remarkably close and went down to the wire, but sadly Cuckfield won both, giving them the victory on ‘countback’.
Headmaster’s Commendation to all 4 players who really did Copthorne Chess proud. Well done.
