Year 2 have been retelling a Bantu tale ‘The Name of the Tree’ in prose and poetry, making sure they remembered to use speech marks:
Round a tree
The king knows the name of the tree.
Gazelle went first.
Elephant went second.
Tortoise went last.
Tortoise said the name
Of the tree … “Ungalli”!
Yummy fruit to eat.
Hooray, hooray, hooray
Well done Tortoise
Up in the sky, the tree was high.
“Neck too short”, said the giraffe
Go and ask the lion!
And the gazelle asked the king.
Lion said “the name of the tree is Ungalli”
Long way to go,
“I know the name of the tree” said Tortoise.
