On Wednesday 15th June, 15 players from Years 3 and 4 of Dorset House School near Arundel, competed in a chess match against every boy and girl in Year 3 of Copthorne. This took place in the time slot for their curriculum chess lesson in the Rendall Room where Mr. Jones welcomed our opposition and their teacher Mrs. White.
In the first match 3SN, captained by Yelena Finnegan, battled very hard with the white pieces with most matches taking over 25 minutes. After a refreshment break, it was the turn of 3RT captained by twin sister Amalia. Playing with the black pieces another spirited effort resulted in the combined match being a tie at 20 games all.
After what had been an extremely enjoyable event for everyone involved demonstrating impressive levels of concentration and sportsmanship each player from both teams was presented with a chess badge to mark their achievement. Both schools expressed a strong desire for this to be the start of an annual challenge match.
