Little Bookworms Club 3rd October 2025 Co-curricular Pre-prep Our Little Bookworms have been busy exploring the magic of stories each week. The children love choosing their own books from our beautiful library, sharing them with friends, and enjoying the wonderful pictures and tales they discover. We feel very lucky to have such a special space where a love of reading can grow!
Maths Skills in Real Life Contexts 26th September 2025 Academic Pre-prep Uncategorised Pupils across the school took part in a special Maths Investigation Day during their regular maths lessons. Designed to bring maths to life, the activities encouraged children to apply their skills in real-world contexts—developing curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving abilities. From cracking codes and solving riddles to exploring medicine ingredients in Year 2 (inspired by George’s Marvellous Medicine), every year group tackled exciting challenges. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils even explored Fibonacci’s sequence, using it to create stunning mathematical artwork. Meanwhile, our youngest learners in Reception explored the concept of size by comparing everyday classroom objects—laying the foundations for mathematical thinking through hands-on discovery. It was a fantastic celebration of thinking creatively and mathematically!
Maths Matching, Sorting and Comparing in Reception! 26th September 2025 Pre-prep Maths has been all about matching, sorting and comparing this week—and we’ve had such a good time doing it! Using our White Rose Maths activities, the children have grouped objects by colour, size and even their own imaginative rules. We found matching pairs of socks and discovered how to use a peg to hang them up! Outside, we drew around all sorts of objects and went on a hunt to find their perfect “match.” From colourful collections to clever categories, our little mathematicians are discovering that maths is everywhere—and it’s lots of fun!
First Steps in Phonics 19th September 2025 Pre-prep Our Reception children are on an exciting journey into reading and writing with the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. This week they have been working hard to recognise and write their very first sounds: m, a, s, d, and t. The children have impressed us all with their enthusiasm and determination, showing real pride in their learning as they practise saying, reading, and writing each new sound. It’s wonderful to see their confidence growing as they take their first steps towards becoming independent readers and writers.
Windows of Wonder 19th September 2025 Pre-prep This week, Year 1 enjoyed a visit to our historic school chapel as they learned about the key features of a church, including the altar, lectern and pews. They asked thoughtful questions and were able to explain some of the features. The children especially enjoyed learning about the windows and doors and their special shape!
Palaeontologist Adventure Day in Year 1! 12th September 2025 Pre-prep Year 1 had a roaring good time on our Paleontologist Adventure Day! We started off the day with a game of Pin the Tail on the Dinosaur, followed by an exciting gooey dinosaur egg hunt in the sensory garden. Each egg held clues that helped us discover different dinosaur names and describe their amazing features. We learned about carnivores and herbivores, tested our dino knowledge in a quiz and became mini palaeontologists as we sieved through sand to uncover hidden fossils. After carefully excavating, we worked out which dinosaurs we had discovered! We also made our own fossils using playdough and had lots of fun dancing like dinosaurs! To end the day, we watched our very own volcano erupt.
Year 2 Settle In 12th September 2025 Pre-prep The children have settled in well and we have had lots of smiles. Year 2 are enjoying being in the new block, especially the lovely views from the classroom windows. We have started our global topic “Where Does Food Come From?” and have had some great discussions about food groups and what makes a balanced meal. In Art, the children have enjoyed creating drip art inspired by Jen Stark. It’s been a great first week and we are looking forward to what next week holds.
Year 2 Head to Drusillas 4th July 2025 Pre-prep Year 2 have had a fantastic week full of sunshine, creativity, and adventures! In Art, Year 2 have designed some thoughtful and imaginative shoes inspired by our work with Sal’s Shoes, as part of our global topic on recycling and reusing. A real highlight of the week was our brilliant trip to Drusilla’s Park. The children thoroughly enjoyed the exciting workshop all about endangered animals, which beautifully linked to our learning about Africa and how we can protect our planet. The workshop also got us thinking about simple ways we can help protect the planet, like planting wildflowers to support bees and other wildlife. This linked really well to what we have been doing at school, where we’ve planted our own seeds and have loved watching our wildflowers begin to grow. We also had plenty of fun exploring the animals at the park and keeping cool with a well-deserved ice lolly in the sunshine! Its been a brilliant week, well done Year 2!
Year 2 Feel the African Beat 27th June 2025 Creative Arts Pre-prep Jambo! We are sure you will agree that the drumming presentation the Year 2s did for their parents was brilliant! The art display, djembe drumming, gumboot dancing and the singing of Sinyenyenye were all remarkable. A huge thank you to our talented Ms Martin-Cole for preparing our musicians.
Our youngest Copthornians enjoy a Summer Fun Day 20th June 2025 Nursery Pre-prep Last Friday, the EYFS department was transformed into a traditional summer fete as children and staff came together to celebrate Summer Fun Day in spectacular style! The air buzzed with excitement as children threw themselves into classic fete favourites like the coconut shy, tin can alley, and hoopla—each game bringing cheers of joy and friendly competition. But the real magic arrived on four hooves: two fabulous unicorns named Fanny and Misty made a surprise appearance, much to the delight of our youngest children. With shimmering colourful manes and gentle nuzzles, the unicorns brought a sprinkle of fairy dust to the sunny afternoon. To top it all off, the jingle of the ice cream van was very welcome with a cooling ice cream for all!
