Copthorne equestrian now dubbed “The West Sussex Raiders” in their customary red livery pulled off the double at the NSEA Surrey County Championships on Sunday held at Bookham Equestrian centre. Jumping conditions on the outdoor grass course, with the recent rain were perfect, there was good cut in the ground and all the ponies were studded up for safety.
The team comprised of Roselly Hamlett together with Georgia and Harriet Keenleyside. So not having a fourth member meant that each riders performance had to count, and didn’t they all perform.
During the warm up, there were whispers around the collecting arena, “Those Copthorne girls look the part, hope they’re not from Surrey?”
In the 70cm jumping all three Copthorne riders rode fast clear rounds winning the team event. Roselly also came 1st as an individual with Georgia and Harriet in close quarters coming 3rd and 5th respectfully.
On to the higher and more technical 80cm class and it was a repeat performance, with three more faultless and speedy clear rounds. Copthorne was the only school in the competition to post a team clear. Georgia was extremely quick and was just pipped in to second place by the last competitor in the individual , with Roselly a close third.
Two team firsts, and four individual triumphs – we certainly left our winning mark and spiced up the day by keeping those Surrey schools on their toes.
Next event, this Sunday the team will be travelling to Berkshire Agricultural College where they will be competing for a further place at the National Championships later this year. Go Copthorne!
