Reading is very much multi-layered. On the surface, when listening to children read, we hear their ability to decode the words in front of them. However, just like an iceberg, there is so much more hidden underneath… and it was with this in mind that we adopted the Accelerated Reader Scheme to assess the progress that children are making with their reading, and not just their ability to decode words. Through a series of four Star Reading Tests (taken by the children in September, December, March and June), regular quizzes that children are encouraged to take when they have completed their reading books and staff questioning when listening to pupils read, we can evaluate comprehension skills. Through this monitoring we identify pupils who might need intervention and help with their reading; whether that is extra 1:1 support or an invitation to one of our book groups. Reading at home also brings so much reward. Isla in Year 4 has earnt an ‘Elite Bookworm’ award via her Kindle which has also shown that she has read over a 100 books! That is amazing Isla!
