U9 Sussex Chess Championships

7th December 2020

Aidan, Adi, Avyanna, Samuel, Maddy, Sienna and Zeel… you have done a fantastic job and have made me very proud indeed. You have represented Copthorne Prep brilliantly and Mr Jones will be delighted because there are some really strong players in this tournament (aside from our own), especially Samuel M – ranked #10 at U8 in the UK with an ECF grade of 84A. Copthorne Prep were utterly dominant. Zeel and Sienna must understand just how strong this U9 tournament is and their results (as U7s) are entirely in line with my expectations. Fantastic that Zeel and Sienna will be playing this event for another 2 years! Can you imagine how strong they will be? The U11 section was very competitive. Amelie got squeezed out of 3rd place on Bucholz scores (tie-break) by her long-time rival Thomas I from Brighton College but there were 5 players on 4/5 including Taran S. Taran finished 6th, Natalie V-H was 10th and Niamh G 13th from a field of 30 players. Daniel A-D also played well in tough company. Great performances all round!
