Mission Statement & Core Values

Underpinning the RE teaching at Copthorne is our Mission Statement and system of Core Values.

Mission Statement

At Copthorne, we believe that mutual respect must underpin everything we do. Children must learn to respect each other as individuals.

In order to learn, children must be happy and feel secure in their environment. Copthorne Prep School is full of happy children and the environment is caring but still allows children the freedom to develop as individuals.

We are proud of our academic reputation as well as the opportunities we provide for each child to achieve across the whole curriculum.

We help to develop children’s confidence and to raise their self-esteem. Nothing does this more than success across the full range of school activities; this is why Sport, Art, Music, I.C.T., Design Technology and Drama are all as important as the pursuit of academic excellence.

We provide opportunities for children to achieve success in all areas of the curriculum and we always celebrate their achievements.

We recognise that all children have talents, and every child is encouraged to realise their true potential, whatever that may be, in whatever area of school life.

We demand and set high standards, and our children respond by always giving of their best.

Put  simply, our mission is to: –

Develop Confidence – Provide Opportunity – Realise Potential – in every single child

Core Values

The really important things we teach children of this age are not just taught in Maths, English or Science lessons.

If we (and our parent body) took a blank sheet of paper, and started to write down what we wanted children to be like when they are 18, we would all write: happy, confident, articulate, well-rounded, tolerant, patient, kind, understanding and enthusiastic about life. We would want them to be popular, to have a good sense of moral judgement, to be able to relate with their peers and with adults, to be polite, to respect people and property, to be good communicators. We would want them to have enjoyed their school days, having made the most of the opportunities that have come their way, and be able to go on and make a positive contribution to our society.

None of the above values are taught in discrete academic lessons and yet I am certain that most of us (and our parents) would put these higher on our list of priorities than success at Scholarship/Common Entrance/GCSE or A levels.

We recognise that “children learn far more from observing how adults live and behave than they do from what they have to say”, so at Copthorne, the way adults and children behave and interact with each other is based on our system of Core Values, devised from collective staff input.

We Encourage All Members Of The Copthorne Community To Be:

  • Confident
  • Diligent
  • Enthusiastic
  • Polite
  • Respectful
  • Loyal
  • Tolerant
  • Responsible
  • Kind
  • Friendly
  • Honest
  • Curious

“We never miss an opportunity to make children feel good about themselves”

Based on the ideal that

“We treat others the way we would like to be treated”

Chris Jones
