Asked to field on a cold and blustery afternoon it became clear that not only was the pitch easy paced, due to recent rain, but the Cumnor batsmen were very accomplished. Although generally the bowlers did well, virtually every wayward delivery was severely punished. Ben K was unlucky on several occasions and Jamie W and Ian also came away with some credit. On another front well done Ian for captaining the side really well in the absence of the unwell James, I thought you did a top job in difficult circumstances. Cumnor finished on 164 from 25 overs giving us another sizeable total to chase.
The chase did not start well as we descended to 1 for 3 after only 3 and a bit overs. Josh and James W, (up from the 2’s) added a few but it was the partnership between James W (34) and Elliot (19) that looked to have saved the day as they took the score along with a series of lusty blows mixed with watchful defence. However Cumnor continued to bowl tempting deliveries, and enthusiasm took over from common sense as both our would be saviours fell to somewhat wild shots! Unfortunately the remaining batsmen barely troubled the scorers as we lost the final 5 wickets for 1 run! We came close to the draw falling short by just 8 balls but we simply didn’t bat well enough. It was yet another game where we allowed the opposition too many cheap runs and then batted, in most cases, with a lack of real application.
One highlight was that we fared better than most of our teams on the day in that we actually managed to play despite the interruption of the hailstorm! JC
