The 1st team took to the field for the first time this season at the annual 8-a-side tournament at neighbouring Ardingly College.
Group Stage results:
Copthorne 0 – 2 St Christopher’s
Copthorne 1 – 1 Bedes (Zac C)
Copthorne 0 – 2 Windlesham
Ending the group stage winless is never a great way to start a tournament and does not reflect well on the team’s performance. However, the way the remainder of the competition panned out shows exactly how tough our group actually was.
Finishing 4th in the group meant that we went through to the Plate semi-final where we met the hosts, Ardingly.
Plate Semi-final result:
Copthorne 3 – 0 Ardingly (Daniel T, Beau H, Ben C)
So, a convincing win in the semi-final meant that we had earned a re-match against Windlesham in the Plate final. On the adjacent pitch the Main Cup final was also kicking off between Bedes and St Christopher’s. That meant that all 4 members of our group made the 2 finals so we were certainly in the more difficult half of the draw.
Plate Final result:
Copthorne 0 – 1 Windlesham
Unfortunately, it wasn’t second time lucky against Windlesham as they ran out 1 nil winners to secure the Plate in what was a tightly contested final.
It was a difficult afternoon for our boys, playing in blistering heat against some tough opposition but they can take many positives from the day. Although the results do not suggest it I was pleased with the overall attitude and performance and believe that we have a good platform on which to build for the rest of the season.
The development of the players is what is important at this age and if they can look back in 3 months time and say “I am now a better footballer” then I will be a happy man. Well done to the following 10 boys … Nick K, Josh V, Luke M, Kieron E, Zac C, Zevon R, Daniel T, Ben C, Beau H and Bradley S.
