1st Girls Hockey v Lancing

22nd September 2016

After a disappointing start to the season last week, the team put in a much better effort this week and were very unlucky not to take away a victory from Lancing on Wednesday afternoon. After a very quick warm up the girls almost went behind early and were lucky to get away with some slack marking. From here on in, the half was very much Copthorne’s as they attacked well down the wings with Jemima C causing all sorts of problems to the Lancing defence. Only bad finishing was the difference between Copthorne leading at half time and it would be a constant theme throughout the match that would lead to frustration at the end. The goalkeeper made a few good saves from Rosie, Katie and Jemima whilst Abi battled hard in midfield to win the ball back.

The second half was more of an even affair with both teams squandering great chances to take the lead. Jemima made some excellent saves in goal and solid defending from Josie and Sheen made the Lancing attack have to work incredibly hard to get near the Copthorne goal. One area to work on over the following week will be short corners. After such hard work winning them the ball never really troubled the Lancing keeper and these opportunities must be taken. Unfortunately with Copthorne dominating time ticked away and the final whistle brought to an end an entertaining game. The score of 0-0 was slightly disappointing and with better finishing next time the score will be a more positive one. Well done to all the girls. I’m sure that first victory is just around the corner.
