1st Girls Hockey v Priors Field

30th September 2016

The First Team made the long trip to Prior’s Field School on Wednesday for Copthorne’s first ever match against them. After a lengthy bus ride we were greeted by a lovely astro pitch and as we were a little early, had the chance to practise and warm up for a good half an hour before the game. Eventually the game began and Copthorne made a solid start, moving the ball around nicely and putting Prior’s Field on the back foot. Good passing from Josie and strong running from Jemima opened up some opportunities but our finishing let us down and the score remained 0-0. Prior’s Field always looked dangerous on the break and they took the lead half way through the first half as slack defending left more or less and open goal. The lead was then doubled when a great strike from the top of the D found its way into the bottom corner of the goal. Jemima then hit the post and more glorious chances were created and subsequently missed leaving the half time score at a disappointing 2-0.

Prior’s Field came out in the second half with purpose and soon extended their lead with some good play. As the score reached 5-0 you could have forgiven the girls for giving up. Far from it though as the girls dominated the last half of the game with yet more chances missed and the post being hit for a second time in the game. Eventually a scramble in the D led to Rosie bobbling the ball towards the goal and in. This was followed a couple of minutes later by a similar situation, this time Katie squeezing the ball home from close range. As the girls celebrated the final whistle sounded. A 5-2 defeat doesn’t really tell the whole story of the game but does highlight that if you don’t take your chances (and we had many of them!) then you won’t win games. On to the tournament at Worth next week where Copthorne have been put into a difficult group.
