1st XI Cricket v Hazelwood

Although very early in the term the advantage of a real match far outweighs hours of net practice as the nets do not generate that match style pressure. Very much a new look 1st XI took on Hazelwood for the first time for many years. A new captain, James Noblett, and vice captain Ian Haywood were announced just before the start. Electing to field in a 25 over game Elliot (1 for 18) and Ian (0 for 19) opened the bowling. Ben K (1 for 17) replaced Ian and bowled well as did Hugo (0 for 6), Josh (2 for 15) and especially James (3 for 12). Catches from Luca (2), Elliot and Oliver and 2 run outs, (Ben W and Luca) saw the opposition skittled out for 116. Half the job was done and I was very encouraged by the performance given the practice time that we have had. The batting however proved rather fragile with only James and Ben K looking like scoring freely. Solid defiance from Ben W and Josh towards the end kept hope alive but too many wickets had been carelessly given away early on and we finished, rather tamely, on 68 after only 18 overs, well up with the required rate but no wickets left. Lots to learn but overall an encouraging start.  JC
