We only seem to have just got going and here we are at the last match. After either a week in Wales or France the boys were not exactly over practiced for the encounter with Pennthorpe. Anyway the day was sunny, the pitch looked good and once again André won the toss and elected to bat. The start was not our best losing Nabil early and then Zac came and went and without the injured Yonis we were looking a bit exposed.
Against a good attack André (43) and Toby (73) decided that today was the day to cut loose. I feel that the confidence they gained at the 6’s was clear to see and they proceeded to take the bowling apart scoring boundaries at will. Toby passed 50 and looked set for the ton when he got a little carried away going for a hat trick of 6’s and missed. André fell just short of his personal 50 playing inside a good delivery. A few fireworks from Will and Ollie left Peter with just 3 balls of the 25 overs left and we finished at tea on 161 for 5. With a fast outfield this was a very gettable total so we would need to bowl and field well.
Zac bowled a good opening spell but André was a little off and took himself out of the attack. Without the leg spin of Yonis we were a little short in the bowling department. Ollie, Nabil and Dan did their best but we were leaking runs far to fast as Pennthorpe closed in on our total. It appeared to be Toby’s day as he came on and started taking wickets, 4 for 26 in the end, and André brought back Zac in an attempt to make a break through. A great catch from Elliott, back in the first’s, and another from André helped our cause but we needed another 3 overs from somewhere! Step up Rohan who took pace off the ball and put a significant break on the scoring. It all came down to the final over from the captain, with even Dylan excited, Pennthorpe needed 8 from the last over.
Tensions were high on both the field and the seated crowd. Copthorne still needed 2 wickets so it was still anyone’s game, who said cricket was boring. Two balls to go and still 5 for the win. No pressure and a dot ball from André. 5 to win off the final delivery so a 6, and there had been several, would win it. Bowler bowled, batsman hit, fielder half stopped but the ball trickled over the boundary for 4.
Scores tied, game over and what a way to spend a sunny afternoon at Copthorne. Honours even and probably a fair result but I can say that I am immensely proud of the manner in which the boys played this afternoon and I hope that those of you watching enjoyed it as much as I did. What a spirit and what a game. A great way to finish and a few thank yous from me. Firstly to Peter Kane for scoring all year, I understand a fee may be required next season! To the loyal parents who have supported the boys over the summer win or lose but especially to the boys who I hope have given you as much pleasure as they have me. Well done and have a great summer.
