Illness and injury meant that Ben B was called up to the 1st XI for the visit of Lancing Prep. This resulted in a slight change of formation and without skipper, Ben C in the line-up we lost some attacking threat. The first half played out very well with everything going to plan. We soaked up the pressure and hit Lancing on the break at every opportunity. We opened the scoring from some good work by Alex M, who fed Sam S in from the right wing and after a quick look up he lobbed the keeper from all of 30 yards. We were defending solidly and looked good for our lead going in to half time.
Lancing came at us with everything they had in the second period and finished the game playing with 4 attackers! With 12 minutes to play we cracked and allowed the visitors to level the score. Soon after, a little indecision at the back gave Lancing another opportunity to score, which they did to take the lead. With only seconds left on the clock we looked like we were about to clinch an equaliser but some superb defending ended all hope of a leveller. Lancing then raced the full length of the field and exploited our lack of cover to finish the game as 3-1 victors.
We played well in parts and on the whole defended excellently. It was clear that we were lacking something in midfield and the amount of pressure that we were under soon took its toll. There were no excuses and at the end of the day the better team won, but I was pleased with the way the boys battled and showed some character. Next week we play our first away match since week 1 as we travel to Ardingly. We have a very good record against them, having not lost in the past 5 years. Let’s see if we can keep that going!
