The 1st XI hosted Pennthorpe this week, looking to get their first win on the board. The previous two matches have been close affairs and this was to prove very similar. Pennthorpe had the larger share of possession, moving the ball well and looked dangerous on the attack. We on the other hand looked a little tentative in possession with nobody wanting to take the game by the scruff of the neck. That said, we continued to create opportunities, forcing corners and free kicks in dangerous positions. It was from a corner that we took the lead with Joseph’s centre being powerfully headed in by Ben. We held firm for the remainder of the half to take a slender lead in to the break.
Pennthorpe began to take more risks in the second half, throwing more players forward in search of an equaliser. This opened up more space in behind that we would look to exploit, however we were unable to add to our tally despite numerous good attacking positions. The visitors got back on level terms following some nice interchanges down the right wing and were soon in the lead with a similar move. When the full time whistle sounded the match ended in a fair result. Pennthorpe made better use of the ball and thoroughly deserved their narrow victory. I am continually impressed with Liban and Louis in the full back positions and I also thought that Charlie, Luca and Austin did well to remain focused as they were called upon far too often.
Next week we have another home fixture against Cottesmore and I expect the boys to turn up to Games on Friday ready to work to keep their place in the team following a solid victory for the 2nd team.
