1st XI Football v Shoreham

7th September 2017

The season opener is always a great opportunity to try out different personnel, systems and positions; and we did just that. In total we made 5 lots of double changes, sharing the playing time around and giving the boys a fair opportunity to show what they can do in a number of different areas on the pitch.

Shoreham maybe had the lion’s share of possession in the first half but we certainly had more play in dangerous areas and if truth be told we should have scored a couple of goals. However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock with a fine strike to the top corner. Half time came and we were feeling positive despite being a goal down.

The second half was a much more open affair with chances for both teams coming and going. We drew level through Sam S, who raced on to a through ball and fired past the keeper from the edge of the box. Although we remained in the game in regards to possession it was Shoreham who found the net next to regain the lead and then increased the deficit from the penalty spot. Unfortunately, Austin could not repeat his first half heroics and make the save from 12 yards.
Although the result went against us, I was very pleased with the performance and on another day it would have been Copthorne walking away with the victory.

There are a lot of positives to take from this match and I am already looking forward to Friday’s session. Congratulations to Ben C who has been named 1st XI Captain for the season.
