Arguably the most difficult game of the season was against a very strong St. Christopher’s side who only last week made it to the last 4 in the National Finals. We started the game very well, defending with aggression and attacking with real purpose. We spoke before the game about making sure the performance level was at it’s highest standard and to try to stick to our game plan of a high pressing defensive line. We harried and hassled hard for a solid 10 minutes and kept the visitors at bay, hitting them quickly on the counter when we broke down their play. Our defence was eventually undone with 3 identical goals; perfectly weighted through balls which were latched upon by their quick forwards who finished well into the corners. It was a crazy 7 minute period where we could not get hold of the ball and found ourselves 4 goals down. The fourth came from a header from a corner. We were forced into a change when Ben B had to leave the field through injury so Dhruv came on for his 1st XI debut.
The second half was a completely different story in regards to goals scored. St. Christopher’s managed to find the back of the net one more time but we seemed to find some aggression from somewhere and made life very difficult indeed. The back 3 of Luca, Charlie and Joe began to combine well and win some important headers. Louis and Liban continued to battle away on the flanks whilst Ben C and Jacob competed well in the centre of midfield. Sam D and Alex worked the attacking line well keeping up with the high pressing line that we had been working on in training. Although he had conceded 5 goals, Austin pulled off some fantastic saves and is really growing into the goalkeeper position.
The win was always going to be difficult this week but the boys continue to impress with their work rate and improve with every match. It has been a tough season but if we look at performances on a game by game basis there has certainly been an increase in skill every week. Next week we play our last game of the season against Cumnor House.
