1st XI Retain the “David Sale Cup”

15th September 2016

The annual “Sale Cup” final against Brambletye came around quicker than usual this season as the 1st XI have not actually played a competitive match together yet whereas Brambletye had faced Vinehall at the weekend.

One way traffic – that is the only way I can describe this match.  The result should have been put to bed in the first half as chance after chance came and went. We had no fewer than 4 one-on-ones with their keeper and managed to hit everything other than the goal.  I had a feeling that this was not going to be our day and things got even worse when Brambletye broke clear to take a 1 nil lead before half time.

In the second half all we had to do was to keep playing the way we were and the goals would come. We kept on pressing and creating chances and it was Daniel who raced clear and slotted the ball home to level the scores – relief!  Moments later we hit the woodwork again, and then forced a great save before missing the target completely. I am not exaggerating when I say that we could have scored 7 or 8 goals today, but that is football.  It does not matter how much possession you have or how many chances you create; you have to execute them.

The target for today was to bring the “Sale Cup” home as neither team had managed to win it back to back for 7 years. So, job done in that sense! Winning some silverware in the first game is a great way to start and hopefully this will act as a catalyst for the rest of the season.  Well done boys, you fully deserved to win this game, however 1-1 was enough to bring home the goods
