1st XI V Duke of Kent

Another cold and cloudy Wednesday for the cricket and another bout of illness/injury for the seniors. Two new faces in the 1st’s, Edward and Ben V, meant serious changes for the 2’s and 3’s as a result. Arriving at Duke of Kent the game was to be a 20 over match with win or loss at the end. James N, back as cpatain, lost the toss and we were put in to bat. After a cautious start Jamie (16) and Ian (56) began to take toll of the bowling and ran well between the wickets to push the scoring rate up. Jamie went in the 10th over with the score at 50. A rare failure from James N (4) brought a watchful Ben K (10) to the crease. Ian, batting really well, completed his first 50 of the season and was then well caught in the deep. James W is always entertaining with the bat and arrived with a flurry of shots scoring 27 in only 12 balls to give us the impetus we needed taking the total to 137 for 5 at the close.
Ben K (3 for 10) bowled an excellent opening spell which removed the bulk of the opposition’s batting, he was well supported by James N (0 for 15) at the other end. Some rather looser deliveries allowed Kent to advance their score before Jamie W (1 for 10) brought the game back in our favour, as they finished on 88 for 5, 49 runs short. The fielding was sharper than earlier and Matt E has grown in confidence behind the sticks which raises the fielding standard all round although the catching could improve as two caught, Hugo and James W, and 2 dropped is not a great ration. Thanks to Ben and Edward for stepping in and I was certainly impressed with their fielding. Overall a very good performance to take the first win of the year. Have a good half term break.
