1st XII rugby v Duke of Kent

15th March 2018

So the end of the another rugby season for the first’s and the end of the 22nd for me. Kent arrived with only 11 boys and we lost Sam S before the start all of which was a little disappointing however we started well and reached half time 5 – 0 to the good with tries from Alex M and Austin (4). We had played some good rugby although Kent had the larger share of possession. The difference was that we defended better than last week and when we did have the ball we tended to turn this into points. A number of subs after the break gave everyone a run out but it did allow Kent to breach our line. Further scores from Alex M, Ben, and Charlie gave us back control and after some really good inter passing Luca scored. The final score 9  – 4 was comfortable but the most important thing for me is the style of rugby that the boys have managed to play. For the year 8’s it was their last match for the 7’s they will have gained great experience which will make them the go to players of next season. For me it was a curious afternoon as I will miss all the training, rain and shine, and the camaraderie which I have had both with the boys and parents over the years. It has been a lot of fun which is what sport is all about. A good season in the end after a difficult start won 6, drawn 1, lost 3 but most importantly the boys have worked hard and improved as a result of their efforts. Once again a big thank you for the parental support which does make a difference.
