1st XV Rugby v St Christopher’s

27th November 2015

Always a tough one to start with and with St Christopher’s answer to Jonah Lomu playing this was going to be hard. However a lot of excitement about the start of a new rugby season and a bunch of keen boys determined to do their best. It did not start well as the big number 8 ran in under the posts straight from the kick off, not only big but fast!

However the boys were not daunted and proceeded to play some excellent team rugby. The pack out rucked and out scrummaged the opposition throughout the game with Zevon even pinching their ball in the set! Bradley grew in confidence and became a real nuisance around the scrum as he realised how different scrum half is at this level. The front five hit rucks with Arjun very much at the front. Above all we were making our tackles and even brought down the big lad, albeit mob handed, on a number of occasions.

The backs ran hard and straight with Zac R, Dan and Elliott cutting through the opposition and it was clear that all the boys would battle right to the end and that is exactly what they did. The back row tackled nearly everything that moved and Zac C made some great runs. Even the wingers and full back got involved.

Inevitably the big lad got away a few times and scored on each one but we fought back and scored 3 good team tries of our own with the 2 Zac’s and Elliott crossing the whitewash.

Although a little cheesed off with the eventual score I cannot praise the boys enough and I was very impressed, after so little training, that we played an exciting brand of competitive rugby so early in the season. I asked for 100% today and that is what I got. Early days but this was very encouraging. Another tough one next week but we are certainly ready. JC
