Our second and probably most challenging fixture against what is always a good team. Unfortunately the 2’s game was cancelled due to a combination of illness, injury and accident however our 1’s against their 1’s was very much on. The opposition I know have 5 senior sides as their 2’s were playing Brambletye 1st XV!

Right from the start it was clear that we were up against it as we were pushed off our own ball and a slick move from the backs produced try number one. Despite all our efforts three further scores followed and we were 26–0 down after only 10 minutes and a long afternoon looked on.

In the true spirit of what sport is all about at this level, Windlesham made some adjustments and we suddenly had a well-balanced game. We managed a try before half time as the pack went over on mass with, I understand, Zevon in control. The new faces Dan T and Kieron played very well and, once again I was very impressed with the gritty defence that we displayed throughout especially as I know a number of the boys were far from fully fit. The final score remained 26 – 5 but it was the quality of the rugby from both sides that made this an enjoyable afternoon.

I believe that I now have a bunch of boys who really want to play and improve so, despite the defeats, this bodes well for the rest of the season. One more to go, at Cottesmore, before the Christmas break, and I know that I will have another top performance from the boys. Let’s just hope that there is a fully fit squad to pick from! JC
