1st XV v Cottesmore

Illness, interviews and dental appointments once again devastated the starting line up for the final pre-Christmas game at Cottesmore. With a novice 2nd row and a number of positional changes we started with great confidence, having won the last 3 encounters. A great start and much better work at the loose gave us good possession and position however a couple of poor decisions and a couple of missed tackles saw the boys back under their own posts on 3 occasions in the first 15 minutes as  Cottesmore capitalised on our mistakes. This basically was where the game was lost but could equally have been won as there was a visible shift in confidence levels. I genuinely believe that this is a game that got away as we made some unforced errors which cost us too many points. Having said all that there were once again some positives on which to build. Aly is gaining in rugby confidence and Ben and Hugo are starting to make an impact around the park (a little more shoulder and less arm will help). Ben V really stood up and gave a great platform for the backs to attack from. Will worked hard although I need to see higher stamina levels from all the front row. Matthew was strong at 10 ably supported by Evan and Sam. Despite their stature Nabil and Dylan made their tackles against much larger opponents putting some others to shame with their efforts. Thank you Elliott for stepping in at the last minute. The replacements showed that they had learnt in training with Yonis sealing off from much bigger boys and Robbie taking a hospital pass with a smile and then avoiding the hit!! Final result, 41 – 7, which again was disappointing but I am happy with the progress made since last week and the continued determination showed by the boys. I am delighted that there is always an enthusiasm and a determination to get better which will ensure our continued improvement. There are a lot of battles to come in the new year but I know that the boys will not be taking a backward step. Thanks for all the parental support which clearly demonstrates the commitment from all parties. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.  JC
