We spoke before the game and knew that Pennthorpe would provide the biggest challenge so far this season and so it was to prove. Although without the usual giants, they were a sizeable outfit. From the first whistle it was obviously going to be a real battle in all areas of the field with no quarter asked or given in the contact area. For the first 15 minutes our pack was bullied at the break down and the backs had very little ball to work with so tackling was the order of the day and we were certainly up to the task to a man. The set plays were solid as usual with the scrum pinching a number against the head. As the first half drew to a close neither side had looked like breaching the solid defensive lines. A series of scrums resulted in one of the Pennthorpe boys suddenly emerging with the ball from the loose and going over under the posts. There was n o time for the kick off so 0 – 7 at half time.

The second half followed the pattern of the first with a real war of attrition going on up front and some big tackles going in from the backs but despite having much more of the ball and some heroic efforts all over the pitch we could not get across the line to score. With time running out and yet more play in the opposition 22 Morgan broke away from a maul and bulldozed over from short range. The kick that followed was critical and Oscar coolly slotted the 2 points and so a draw was gained.

The euphoria that followed from the boys really did demonstrate how much the game meant to the boys which is rather what sport is all about. I have to say that I was very proud of the manner in which the boys battled against the odds today as it shows what real character they have. Thanks for the vocal support as usual it does mean a lot to your boys. No rugby next week so we await Handcross Park on the 16th. Well done boys, awesome!!
