A bright and sunny afternoon greeted the 2nd VI to Brambletye on Wednesday afternoon. After winning the toss, Brambletye put Copthorne into bat first.

In a timed game, Copthorne were given a maximum of 27 overs to face and in the end took all of them without declaring. Another poor start by the top order saw Copthorne slump to 15 – 4. Freddie came in to bat and after a bit of a cagey start soon got his eye in and smashed the ball to all parts of the ground in a great display of power hitting. He was eventually bowled out for 42 and was backed up by Zevon (11) and Kai (11) who also batted nicely. Copthorne ended their innings on 91-9 reasonable score after such a poor start.

After tea the task was simple – bowl out the opposition before 5.40pm. Things got off to a great start with Nathan bowling the opening batsmen and Elliott taking a fantastic run out with an excellent throw directly onto the stumps. Brambletye’s next two batsmen were in for the long haul and were difficult to get out. Neither scored many runs but anything that was bowled straight to them was defended away. This continued for many frustrating overs and the game looked as if it was heading for a draw.

Finally came a breakthrough with Elliott bowling one of the stubborn batsmen and then in the following over Ben took a great catch off of Nathan’s bowling.

With time running out two more quick wickets were taken with Toby taking a good sharp catch and Nathan taking another wicket. Unfortunately time just ran out. With 5 more overs I think the boys would have won.

It was a solid performance from the boys who seem to be gaining in confidence every week. I’m sure they will get a better result soon. A disappointing draw but some may say a winning draw as Brambletye never came close to troubling Copthorne’s score, ending up on 62-6, 30 runs short of the required target. CC
