The first game of the season brought around some positive play but in the end a disappointing result against Hazelwood.
The toss was won by Hazelwood who decided to put Copthorne into bat first. A disastrous start saw two of the opening three batsmen lose their wicket on the first ball faced. From here a rebuilding job was made by Austin (17) and Freddie (8). Eventually both were run out carelessly. The main thing keeping the score ticking over was the extras column as Hazelwood continued to bowl a number of wides giving Copthorne 2 runs every time. Kye and Ben remained in bat for a while but only managed to score 3 runs each. The rest of the batsmen failed to trouble the scorecard apart from Raymond who scored a single run. The huge extras column left Copthorne on 94 all out.
Hazelwood’s opening batsmen started well hitting the ball around the pitch. Finally Nick and Freddie managed to stem the flow of runs with some tight bowling and suddenly the game looked in favour of Copthorne. Austin came on to bowl and quickly took two wickets in his first over as Copthorne remained on top. A few run out chances were missed and this would end up costing the team as a couple of poor overs got Hazelwood right back in the game. Kye managed to take one more wicket but unfortunately it was Hazelwood who reached their target with two overs to spare. There were some positives to take from the game although there are most definitely some things to work on before the team take on Windlesham next week.
