2nd VII Netball v Cottesmore – Feb 2017

26th February 2017

The 2nds travelled the short distance over to Cottesmore for their netball match this week. Captain Jemima unfortunately lost the toss and so we chose the shooting end. The first quarter was a close encounter with both sides having chances on goal and possession changing sides regularly! The drizzle started to become a little more persistent which made the surface and ball a lot more slippery, so there were a lot of handling errors creeping in for both teams! Cottesmore had the upper hand when the whistle went after the first 10 minutes, with a one goal lead 1-2.

After a quick team talk to encourage Jemima (GA) and Grace (GS) to pass the ball to each other quicker in our attacking D we started the second quarter. Excellent strong, alert defence work from Katherine (GD) and Shriya (GK) prevented the Cottesmore shooters from having many chances on goal, but it was lovely to see the team talk worked and our shooters scored 4 goals between them with some excellent movement and passing in and around the D with no reply from Cottesmore!

Abi, in the Centre position, was instrumental in controlling the game and she worked tirelessly all over the court intercepting, and off-loading really well. Lara and Lily-Grace found some good space to help bring the ball down to the attacking D. Isabella supported well in both the WA and WD positions and Leah defended strongly when contesting for the ball. We continued to play well in the third quarter and kept our noses in front with a 3 goal lead; 9-6.

It was ours to lose in the final quarter! We started off poorly and Cottesmore took advantage of our mistakes, closing the gap on the scoreline 9-8. However, the Copthorne girls cleared their heads in the last few minutes and with some excellent work again from the whole team; we finished the game strongly with 3 goals in quick succession.

Congratulations to Katherine who was voted player of the match for her fabulous defending!

Well played girls, it was a real privilege to umpire for you today. A really nice game, with a really nice bunch of girls. Well done!
